I love cruise control. We have lots of police patrols around here, and CC keeps me from getting a speeding ticket. It's especially good on long trips.

The only time I use cruise control is during a long stint when I use it so I can exercise my right leg. I like to be in control, which is why I don't like automatic transmissions and cruise control. Not using cruise control also keeps me involved in my driving. Every few years I get a speeding ticket (two in about the last 20 years), as I am an aggressive, but careful driver, and most of my speeding is done in the twisties. My last speeding ticket was on a beautiful clear day on U.S. 101 south in Washington state, about an hour north of the Oregon border. I was going downhill through a series of fast sweepers and was getting into a nice rhythm. A state trooper going the other way got me on radar at 69 in a 55. The road conditions were perfect, the road was in great shape, there was no traffic, I have ultra high performance tires (Bridgestone S-04s) and Koni shocks on what is a great handling sedan and I could have safely been going 90. Apparently U.S. 101 in Washington and Oregon is closely patrolled.

We have driverless cars today!!! Texting and talking on cell phones.

I look forward to autonomous cars. There will be some large technical, legal, and sociological problems to overcome in the process. One will be displacement of people that drive for pay such as truck drivers.

Not having a car move from left lane across a couple of lanes to exit in a tenth mile because the driver wasn't paying attention would be a great improvement!!

That happened to me twice today driving back from Monrovia. First time, no warning, driver suddenly cut right over in front of me while HE was hitting the brakes to make the exit. I had to brake then swerve, I avoided him by no more than 10 feet. The 2nd guy quickly swerved into the exit lane then decided "no didn't really want to exit" but the exit is an old clover-leaf design, a sharp right curve and between the freeway and the exit is a guard rail. He almost hit the guard rail swerving back onto the freeway, and of course there was a car there so he had to drive on the shoulder for a bit to merge back in.

Your right self driving cars probably wouldn't' do that. Unless they get hacked and hit by a virus while in route.
