You have accomplished what I could not do, you stayed still long enough to get this shot. I would have been hauling ass the other way.
I have lived in Colorado, almost my entire life, I was a boy scout here, I have hiked, climbed, and camped all over this state. I have never [thank the lucky stars] come up next to a rattler.
A little trivia for you. Way back, a long time ago, Carter Lake used to be called Rattlesnake Lake.
I'm a Colorado native. So are my wife, kids, and grandchildren. Can't say I've seen a lot of rattlesnakes, but I have seen my fair share. This is the first we have encountered on a hike. And to be fair, the park service did have a warning sign about rattlesnakes in the area. I have a healthy respect for them, so I do give them a wide berth.
I did not know that Carter lake used to be called Rattlesnake Lake. this shot was taken at Bobcat Ridge, which is a few miles north of Carter Lake, but pretty much about the same elevation.
