A few butterflys i saw during a visit to a local preserve.

First one I identified as a Monarch, but have been told is a Queen Butterfly (a close, non-migrating relative of the Monarch) - can anyone confirm.

Second a Buckeye

Third and fourth - I have no idea.

I love butterflies and carve them out of tupelo gum wood. Your first butterfly is perfect reference material for me as a carver. I hadn't been able to see as much of the white on the wings until I saw your photo.
Photo 4 is a question mark. His wings are very torn like I noticed some of mine last year. Can you tell me what causes that? Wind, preditors I don't know. They seem to be able to fly OK.

Eastern swallowtail.

I didn't know until I started carving butterflies that their colors vary from region to region. That was a problem for me because I would see one picture of a monarch and it would be one color and another picture would be different. I just use the colors on the pictures I take at my house.

I'm sorry that I posted #4 as being a question mark. I think it is a comma. Only a slight distance in the key strokes but a lot of difference in the butterflies.
