Sweet shots. Number four is really clever.

Very nice shot Jim. Selfies in the studio are really tough to do.

Thanks. This photo was shot in my basement (my studio). I used a single speedlight with a diffuser on it triggered by the on camera flash. I held a 20" x 30" piece of white foamcore in my right hand to bounce some light back on me. It is a piece of black fabric for a background (which I use often). Lens was a 55-200mm at 135mm. A 10 second delay on the shutter. Focus was trial and error.

Got a new second speed light and a couple of new soft boxes. It took about ten test shots to get everything lined up, focused, and the lighting the way I wanted it. Not to mention I only gave myself two seconds to pose. So Jim, I really appreciate your studio selfie.

Good looking photo Tom.

You definitely did it right.

I shot mine in the garage — I wouldn't dare put a vehicle in there. I used two speedlights with radio flash trigger. One in a 24" Westcott Rapid Box, the other in a 40" Westcott Apollo Orb. Sigma 70-200mm at 42mm. ISO 100, f/11, 1/60 sec. I used a two second delay, because I'm too impatient to wait ten seconds. I bought a couple of yards of grey felt from the fabric store for the back drop. I'm cheap, and grey felt works great. Shooting on grey makes compositing easier if I want to Photoshop in a different background. For focus and camera alignment, I set a stick up with a mark on it at my eye level. I then focused manually on the stick. I used a higher f-stop for greater depth of field in case I wasn't sitting exactly in the right spot. I would normally shoot at f/8.0 That part worked well. It took a lot of tries to get the power right on the flashes, and several more tries to make sure my pose was okay, and my eyes were open.

What I like about selfies is that I know what I want to do and also if I don't like it I can always sue myself and make some money

We all try to improve our photos. That's a good thing. Sometimes it's also a good thing to just let your hair down (if you're like me, that's easy because there isn't much left) and have a good time not worrying about camera settings and composition. It's fun to just be goofy sometimes. So break out your cell phone or point & shoot and just have a good time fooling around.

Thom thanks for hosting the Challenge, a really interesting start
