Hi, I bought new batteries for my flash and my wireless remote. I set the remote setting in the camera. But, I use BBF, not shutter release. Is there a way I can set the camera to work with BBF, as the remote is not working with it. Or, will it only work with shutter release? Thanks
Mine work fine, do you have the settings right? Sorry what is BBF?
I don't know if this is the case but on some cameras (my Canon) not all functions will work with BBF.
Sorry, BBF is back button focus.

If you set one of your user modes U1 or U2 to "not" use BBF, and then use that mode with your remote, it might solve your AF problem.
Oh, wow, I thought that would work. It didn't. Do I need to set the camera internally to shutter release also? Thanks

On my Canon, my remote only does what the shutter button is assigned to do, no other buttons.

In mode U1 or U2, whatever control button you assigned for AF control, turn it off, or back to it's normal setting. For instance, if you assigned BBF to the AE-L/AF-L button, change Custom menu F4 back to 'AE/AF lock', and the release button should then go back to it's normal half-press for AF.
You may want to have Custom menu A2 set to 'focus' and not 'release' if you want to be sure your camera finds something in focus before releasing the shutter. Save your user settings so they survive a power off mode change.
I can't find my ml-l3 to test (I've been using radio controls too long), and I actually prefer to have my camera "not" try to re-focus before a remote shutter release, so that's the best advice I can give now.
I have been assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that you are having trouble with AF using the ml-l3. If it is not working at all, be sure you have the 'Shooting Menu' remote control mode (ml-l3) set to your desired option(and not 'off').
Dang!! Thank you all for your responses, but I tried everything and can't get it to work. I don't know what else to do. Anybody know any videos that may tell something different?

I highly recommend you check this out.
http://backcountrygallery.com/secrets-nikon-autofocus-system/If your camera settings for BBF are properly set,you attain focus by pushing the back button, when you release it,your focus will be locked and I believe the remote will activate the shutter release regardless of whether or not you are in focus. Settings require you to be in AF-C and RELEASE shutter mode. On the site I sent you to,BBF set up will be demonstrated. Good luck.
Hopefully someone will chime in that has tried to use the ML-L3 in this application.
Which problem are you having? Is it not working at all? Or, is the AF not functioning as you want it to work?
I finally found my ml-l3, and it works fine with my D750 both with BBF and without BBF. I must make sure to turn on the ml-l3 function in the 'Shooting Menu'.
If I have AF-S release mode set to focus, it will fire only after locking focus on 'something' in the scene (depending on the AF area and not using BBF). With BBF, both AF-S and AF-C are set to 'release' so it always fires (as long as it sees the signal from the remote).
I did notice that if I turned 'on' the ml-l3 function while in any mode, and then powered down, it reverted to 'off' again next time I turned on the camera. This apparently cannot be overridden by saving to U1 or U2. So it looks like every time I want to use it, I must re-check that setting in the Shooting Menu. I guess Nikon doesn't want to risk random infra-red signals tripping the shutter. So, it is not a 'sticky' setting.
Rick, I think you hit the nail on the head. It reverts back to off and doesn't stay on 2sec. I will try tomorrow and see if it works. Thanks!
I"ve been successful in using my remote using the above configuration.

You're welcome. I hope that solves your problem. If not, and it's not working at all, the only other thing I can think of is to re-check that your 'new' battery is seated properly in the ml-l3, and that nothing is obstructing the IR beam.
