Sony a6000 lens choices

A while ago I bought a Sony a6000 and it came with an 18/55 F3.5-5.6 lens (SEL1855) and shortly afterwards I acquired a Sony 18-105 F4 lens (SELP1805G). I used it very little, not sure if I was unhappy with the lens choices or the camera (my main camera is a D800). The a6000 is OK, I'm slated to go on 8 day trip via train in June and took this out of mothballs. Figuring its smaller size would make it a better choice on the train. There are 3 day stops planned where we get off one train stay overnight in a hotel and then board another train the next day. So I'm looking to minimize the luggage.

So I'm at a decision point on which prime lens to get. The Sony E 35 mm F1.8 OSS or E 50 mm F1.8 OSS.

Any suggestions?

Ed

I love my A6000 (also have a A7rII). The 18/55 is trumped by your 18-105 which many feel is the best all around lens for the camera. between the 35mm and 50mm I personally would choose the 35mm. However my 35mm is the Zeiss FE 2.8 which is a spectacular tiny lens and would be about 50mm equiv on your A6000. Another lens to consider is the 24mm 1.8 Sony/Zeiss. That lens lives on my A6000. I don't miss optical stabilization on these normal lenses, but it can be an advantage depending on what your style of shooting is. One final comment: I am an very strong enthusiast of the Sony RX10 Mark I which you can get for around $400 used. You get a constant aperture ZEISS 2.8 zoom with range of 24-200, OSS, built in flash, electronic viewfinder, clickable aperture ring, and amazing image quality...all for about what you would pay for a single lens to place on your A6000. I consider the RX10 version I the best value travel camera on the planet.

You mentioned "mothballed" and that brought this advice to my mind. Do get out and shoot now! Whichever lens you choose. I have the A6000 and am having fun with it but, each camera has its peculiarities and practice before the big event is so important.

After buying the camera and 18-55mm, I bought the 55-210mm used. That will be the extent of my A6000 lens collection.

I suggest you get out more with the 18-105 "G" lens as that lens is probably the most useful, especially if you use video. I also have the RX-10 version l, and agree with tinplater on that, except I now have an A7ll, and enjoy its horsepower!

I think the 18-105mm should do you nicely for anything you will come across. I have the Sony 50/1.8, the Sony 35/1.8 and the Zeiss 24/1.8 mentioned above. Of those three primes, the Zeiss 24/1.8 is my favorite for walking around, but it is a bit pricier than the others. I your case, I would consider getting the Rokinon 12mm F2.0 which would really extend your wide angle and low light capability and sits very nicely on the A6000.

I had the 35 mm lens- it was ok but I ended up returning it- kind of ho hum. You might consider getting a Sigma 19 mm f 2.8 lens for Sony. Equivalent of 28 mm lens which is good for landscapes, interiors and street photography. Nice IQ and very sharp. And compact. Or you might look at the 16-70 mm and only take that one. Depends on how much you want to spend and haul. Have fun!

FWIW. Have been in very similar situation ~ a6000 + a zoom. What to take for low light, street, candid "portraits"? At home, I usually have the Zony 24mm or the Sony 35mm (f/1.8's), mounted on the camera. But, when I get on the plane it's the 50mm f/1.8 that goes in the bag with body and zoom. Have taken three trips (domestic airline), summer and winter, and the 50mm (75mm equiv) always gets to go with me.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did take out the sony today with the 18/105 F4 and although it works OK, it a little too bulky. While at a local camera store in Orlando they did have a Sony RX10 II for sale for a reasonable price. I played with it, its a little smaller than the a6000 combo but I did like the 28/200 f2.8 (constant) lens. So I bought it. I will be taking it out tomorrow to get used to it.

I think you will find the RX10 equal or superior to the A6000 plus 18-105 as the camera is amazingly versatile and has excellent video in case you are into that. It is nice to have so much capability packed into such a reasonable size.
