I want to take indoor volleyball & outdoor soccer photo's. I have a Nikon D5300 and a Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Dill VC PZD Macro. My pictures are not sharp and was wondering if I need to upgrade my camera/lens to be able to get good photo's. What would you recommend I do to improve my photo's. Maybe I only need to learn more on how to set the settings correctly. Is my camera capable & not my lens or is my lens capable & not my camera? What do you think?

It is hard to say without seeing some of your photos. I believe the combination of camera and lens is capable of great photos.

dennis2146 thank you.
are you saying the combination I have is good or the purchase of d7200 + 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is capable of great photos?

Probably both. Without seeing your photos I think anyone on UHH would want photos to see if there is something you could change/do better to improve your photos. But I do think your present camera and lens should work well. If you are able to buy the D7200 and 70-200 lens then so much the better. I hope that makes sense.
May I ask where in Idaho do you live? I just bought a place in Idaho Falls.

Without seeing any images, and just looking at DXOmark testing, your lens/camera combo is capable of only 7 perceived megapixels of sharpness, and it is sharpest at the lowest zoom settings.
Changing to almost any version of a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens will pretty much guarantee sharper results at your sporting events. Tamron's 70-200 f/2.8 G2 should also give you over double the current possible sharpness of your existing lens... at a cost much less than the current Nikon offering (G2 not yet tested, G1 16P-megapixels of sharpness).
I will make some guesses.
1. You are shooting using about 200 mm
2. You are shooting at a f2.8 or there abouts
3. You are shooting at about 1/100 of a sec
4. You are not using a flash
5. You are experiencing camera shake.
SOLUTION!
Buy a 50 1.8 or less and you will avoid camera shake and avoid blur. Get off your duff and get close to the net so that you don't need to use a tele! Notice where pros sit for Basketball!
vma I shoot soccer regularly and recently tested the new AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR Nikkor on a D7100 the results are outstanding... image quality easily approaching the pricey AF-S 70-200mm F/2.8G which is way heavy...
The new pulse stepper motor is a paradigm shift for Nikon and a game changer... it actually focuses faster than my 200-500mm f/5.6 and is equal to my AF-S 70-200mm F/2.8G Nikkor... best of all it's feather light at 415 g and only $208 white box or $395 with a 5 year warranty...
I'm still processing this recent shoot and will post imagery shortly (provided client workload permits)...
Since you have a Nikon D5300 it will work on your camera... but you'll likely need to upgrade your firmware...
And even with the firmware upgrade some features will not be available to you (this lens only works out of the box with the D500 and D5)
Caveat! The build quality of this lens is consumer grade meaning it will not take much abuse... not a problem if you are careful with your gear... If otherwise purchase the 5 year warranty, k?
As for sharp images? Is it a focus issue or a motion blur issue... There is a huge difference here...
Best advice? I shoot soccer at a minimum of 1/1600 wide open and with this AF-P lens I shot at 1/2000 just to make sure that acuity was not a motion blur thing... was able to shoot at f/6.3 ISO 400 bright sunlight... no noise and razor sharp images...
Save your money and give the new Stepper Focus Motor a try... You'll likely be far happier than lugging around that heavy 70-200mm... But if you go that route a strongly recommend a Black Rapid strap to save your neck... I will not shoot that lens hand held without it...
Enjoy your soccer, and yes the AF-S 70-200mm F/2.8 is a wise choice if you are shooting indoor sports...
As for the The D7200? It is a stellar DX body...
I totally love mind and the IQ is far superior to the pricey D500...
Don't believe this?
https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Nikon-D500-versus-Nikon-D7200-versus-Nikon-D750___1061_1020_975Food for thought... I rarely shoot DX any more for sports owing to want of shallow depth of field...
In sports subject isolation isn't just important it's everything! At least my clients think so :)
Hope this helps vma

IF, and that is a big IF, you are considering replacing your camera body, please consider a D500. The lens you have is a bit 'slow' for indoor sports, but should be adequate for the outdoor version. Next is proper settings and good technique. Only experience will really improve your images, and you can gain experience with whatever body/lens combination you now have. As a pro sports action shooter, I can tell that I was terrible at this when I started. I found others who helped me advance my abilities and I practiced, practiced and did more practice. Best of luck.
