I caught this beast on my window sill this morning. Unable to ID. Anyone?? Head to tail measures about 1". In New York.

maybe it is an ichneumen wasp. if so its feeds on other insects an therefore is beneficial
Nice shot but I don't think it is a fungus gnat, they are only about 1/8 inch long and usually covered with white fungus.
Crane flies have a long proboscis that I don't see here.
This looks more like like a wasp, probably a Ichneumon wasp
