Trying to ID

I caught this beast on my window sill this morning. Unable to ID. Anyone?? Head to tail measures about 1". In New York.

I just ID'd it, it is a fungus gnat. Guess I need a better reference source!!

maybe it is an ichneumen wasp. if so its feeds on other insects an therefore is beneficial

Nice shot but I don't think it is a fungus gnat, they are only about 1/8 inch long and usually covered with white fungus.
Crane flies have a long proboscis that I don't see here.
This looks more like like a wasp, probably a Ichneumon wasp http://bugguide.net/node/view/150/bgimage
