Lithium ion batteries - Care & Feeding

I've heard several things about the care of the lithium ion batteries that power my iPhone, my Apple mouse, and my D810: 1) Don't leave them charging after they reach a 100% charge; 2) Let them discharge fully once in a while; 3) Never let them discharge fully. Anybody have the straight scoop?

Follow the directions in your user’s manual.

What's wrong with discharging fully, done that many times with no issues ever?

The "leaving on charged" is the tricky part. Don't modern, quality chargers stop charging when the battery is full? Are we supposed to hire someone to wait for the light to go out and unplug the charger? I just plug them in when they get low and unplug them when I see that they're charged. dpullum gave you a good link - lots of good info there. Below is another link to the same site, posted by someone a while ago. With the price of batteries and devices, it pays to get the most out of them.

Most DSLR cameras and cell phones turn off when reaching the minimum recommended discharge.

However you charge or do not charge. disposal is a different issue. Don't just throw them out. Elemental lithium is explosive--cell phone explosion for example. Pacemakers and defibrillators must be explanted before cremation. as they can explode.,and demage the crematorium. So you have to bring them to a disposal station, or a store that can safely discard them.

Modern chargers shut off when batteries are fully charged. When I show one bar on the camera I remove the battery and put in the charger. Pretty simple
