Ok my Dad came into town , which for me is Anchorage, Alaska. We decided to take him up to Fairbanks in hopes of finding some bears or moose or SOMETHING....rained all the way up....so animals were all hunkered down....on the way back...nary a creature stirred....but I did take some shots of the Alaska Pipeline. Its 800 miles long from Valdez to Deadhorse...Prudhow Bay. It winds zig zag through the state and goes above ground in some places and is buried in others. The "pig" in the photo goes through the oil and cleans any sludge buildup....this visitor site is in Fox Alaska...just 8 miles outside Fairbanks. None of these photos are PP yet. Straight from the camera.

some Alaskans get political...lol

I've heard about it for many years but never had a chance to see it. Thanks for sharing to give me an opportunity to see what it's all about.

My sister was born in Fairbanks. A few years ago we took a cruise and inland train trip. The Alaskan pipeline was one of the things we visited. It is amazing as is the great state. We had a wonderful time.

The black one thats upright was a special pig now retired that went through the pipeline first to get rid of a sticky residue that was in the pipe in the beginning.... the current "pigs"....are the mechanism inside the pipe in some of the pictures....the dark areas on the pipeline itself every so many feet are areas where the pipeline can be checked by officials...those open and there are gages showing flow rate and temperature as the pipeline is heated. In fact all along the arctic area the heat under the pipeline has caused grass to grow on the tundra there and caribou and wolves and other wildlife love to graze right under the pipeline.

I have been there too. That was just the beginning of our journey though. We traveled up the entire length of the Dalton Highway which parallels the pipeline all the way to Prudhoe Bay. It is amazing the effort they take to preserve the natural habitat. The support poles with the fins on top act as coolers to protect the permafrost. Approximately half the pipeline is above ground and, in many cases, high enough above ground to not interfere with wildlife, especially caribou migration.

Hi Lassie, Thank you for posting the pipeline pixs. Like most of us, this the first time for me to see it. I remember when it was being built and people tried to stop it. Afraid it would prevent the migration of the animals. How wrong they were! Now if our government would stop sending the oil to other countries when we need it the most. We could be independent of foreign oil. Woops, get me off of my soap box. Sorry. :-P

Thanks for these photos. We were in the exact same place last July. Something to see. Like your shot of "just the pipeline". I have the same shot. We saw a stuffed moose and an "attack squirrel" for our animal sightings. Thanks again.

hey I agree with you hon....we drove up toward Prudhoe bay and saw herds of caribou underneath the pipeline...they liked the warmth since its heated and underneath it grows grass!
