My new wife and I fed the bears what remained of our wedding cake in 1967. How dumb was that? For some reason, although an avid almost professional photographer than and sometimes later, I took almost no pictures, none of the bears, just a few scenes with an old (1930s) 616 folding camera I had just bought in a Denver pawn shop.

Make sure you allow a lot of time for the TetonNP Thought it was better than Yellowstone

Just read an article that the senior pass is going to $80 by the end of the year. Get yours soon!

There is a good chance you will need winter coat, hat, and gloves after dark. Maybe in daytime. Better to have and not need than the other way around. Carry them on and stuff in the overhead so you won't waste baggage space. Have fun -- wish I was going.

Wow! 'DRG777' the image of the eruption is nice, thank you for sharing.
All the advice from everybody are very helpful, I will keep them in mind, now my confident is getting higher and I still a few months to plan and prepare. Thank you very much to all of you!

YW. We saw 8-10 different geysers erupting. I highly recommend in park lodging to save travel time within the park. However, it fills up fast and you have to book early, up to a year ahead. We stayed at 3-4 different locations to always be close to the sights.

Senior pass also gets your carload into the parks. Good at monuments and all federal but not good at state and local. Best thing we did was get the senior pass. South Dakota parks are not federal parks so if you go that route be prepared to pay at the gate.

Since you will be in Yellowstone NP, I would encourage you to drive to the south end of the park and drive into the Grand Tetons. More beautiful scenery and wildlife. My daughter took a trip last October and they did both Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Both are absolutely beautiful. Take the time to do some research on what to see. Google Maps/Google Pics, 500PX. com, etc. Will give you a great idea of what you might like to see. The tourists were sparse in mid-October - just before the things closed down. Have fun, and heed the warnings of others about the wildlife. As the tourists depart, the wildlife starts to expand their "territory" and you may see a lot more bears, buffalo, moose, elk and other beautiful animals than seen by those who visited earlier in the season.

Have fun preparing for a wonderful adventure and then have a safe and memorable trip with the family.

My family of four will go to the Yellow Stone National Park this early October, this is the first time for me there. I would like to get some advice from those who had been there. We are planning driving our self instead joining the tour group, this will give us more option and freedom, of course, photography is main goal for us. One thing I am concerning is the safety travelling in the Park driving alone.
Please feel free to give me your opinion! Thank you!

We went to Yellowstone in June 2012 after Mt. Rushmore, and then we went to the Tetons. It looks like Mt. Rushmore is on your way, so definitely do not miss it. If they are still having the evening program, it is not to be missed. When you drive the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain road, there is a preferred direction to give you the best vistas; if you go the other way, they will be in your rear view mirror. Ask a park ranger about the best way to go. We were unimpressed with Crazy Horse and think your time and money is better spent doing other things. We spent the night after Mt. Rushmore in Spearfish SD and the drive from there to Yellowstone (we stayed at the Yellowstone Lake Hotel) is beautiful. We went via Ten Sleep Canyon/Powder River Pass and it was great. The Tetons are also not to be missed. The drive up to the top of Signal Mountain gives you spectacular vistas of the whole area and is definitely worth your time.

I would like to add to that, an advance study of the geology of the area will add significantly to your enjoyment of the scenery. Seeing how beautiful it is, is only touching the surface. Understanding what you are seeing adds a lot

It was a big plus for us. A quick drive to Hebgen Lake is a nice little addition.
