Although it seems early in the year for fully fledged chicks, what other interpretation can be applied to the activities I observed yesterday? Female hummers are well known for protecting a food supply such as hanging hummingbird feeders. The past 3 or 4 days the male has been the guardian of our feeders. Yesterday one male and two females put on a prolonged period of bird-fighting exhibitions and I shot twenty-some photos of them backdropped by a well-weathered sheet hanging behind the feeders from the camera. For the most part the male was in his guard position on a grape vine while the two females made high-speed circuits of the back yard and deck area. It was as though a chick was going through a training period of defend/retreat/attack tactics after which the three gathered at the feeder.

Thank you, Karin and Woodsman. Yes, 1 and 2 are those shots that only come along about, oh, say every 20,000 shutter clicks.

A little over processed, but still very nice shots

Thank you, speters. I may have been a little heavy-handed. Here is #3 as-shot. You be the judge.
