A good friend is going to buy a camera and is undecided on wether to get a DSLR with 3 or so lens or perhaps one camera with one lens like the Powershot SX 40 ... Not knowing Anything about the 40, other than what I've read, I told him that I would ask the question to the "Uglies"....
Anyone have experiance with the 40 ?
I love my SX 40 and have printed as large as 20x30 from it. I enjoy not changing lenses and packing extra gear. The only drawback is obvious: A smaller sensor makes smaller pictures. If you crop much at all, then you are limited in how much you can enlarge. Otherwise, there is absolutely nothing I do not like about it.

==================================Hows the viewfinder ? read some grips about that...

I'm not at a level where that concerns me. If there are problems, I am not aware of them. I love the flip-out screen and make extensive use of it - especially from a tripod.
SFS again.... (Spastic Finger Syndrom

Thanks for the info... I'll pass it on....
Don...If your friend is interested in a camera to document family occasions and get some snapshots on vacation, the Powershot should be an excellent camera. We have a smaller Powershot that will fit in your pocket and it takes excellent pictures. It just depends on how serious he wants to get with his photography.
The photo below was taken by my wife with a small Powershot at Big Bend N.P.
I sold my D5000 and kept the SX40. The Nikon was just too big, too much stuff to lug around all the time. I've been very happy with the photos I've been getting - especially with the recent eclipse and transit of Venus - without a telescope.
Steve, he's familiar with the P/S's, but wants something a tad better and thinking of the SX40 route....

Carioca ( cha, cha, cha...), Ya, thats his thinking also... Sometimes "less" is "best"...(try telling that to my ex)...
In fact, it sounds good to me too...........
Thanks a bunch for all of your input...
In fact, and this is for my satifaction, could someone sell me a couple of shots taken at the two extrems setting of the lens ?? I would really like to see the results...(click the "store orginal" box....
Thanks, Don
Don...I'm sure the SX40 would do better than the point and shoots. However, it still leaves the question unanswered as to how serious your friend is with his photography.

Try these. In pic # 1 you can barely see the house that is in # 2.

Here's one at full zoom. I can't find a wide angle shot for you, sorry. I guess I'm addicted to zoom! :P
Jet Ski
Some SX40hs hand-held with no PP. Also look for some pics by Marilla on this site who also uses the sx40
zoom extended to include some digital zoom, while seated in a running vehicle
from same place as the pic above
Hand held, NO flash
hand held, too dark to see any of the details with the naked eye

sx30, THE 40 IS EVEN BETTER
What's that? a kite=powered vehicle?
Bad panning technique - just out of frame
Oh, and you want manual capability? Too many clouds for a good supermoon shot, so I tried a "Moonlight" exposure.
DHey everyone ! I thank you for your replies....
Personally speaking, I am VERY impressed....
Right now I carry around 4 different lens...Now, I'm athinking....
