Bruce, It was windy and this dragonfly was landing and taking off over and over on the same perch.

The 10 fps on the D500 helps catch these moments in time that I was struggling to catch with my D810.

A delicate beauty. Amazing you caught it with just the two legs touching. How many shots to achieve?

The composition is perfect IMO - just the right amount of environment to understand the behavior, but still plenty of size and detail in the dragonfly. For me, takes the image beyond purely documentary.

Linda, I was checking a few spots for my preferred subject the Halloween Pennant but still too early as I am yet to see the first one. I spotted the female Marl Pennant and she was fighting the wind to hold her perch. During the middle of the day I am noticing that some dragonflies seem the rest on a high perches trying to stay cool. She would lose her grip and return to same perch so I was on a dirt road and just pulled the truck to within 10 feet and shot out the driver window. I would continuously group focus on the Horse Grass with it on the left edge as the wind was blowing left to right and she would always fly in right to left. I would start a burst as I saw her enter the frame and the D500 would lock on to her as she entered the right side of the group focus. I shot about 50 frames all total and have several stages on landing and this one being the pick of the litter.

Thanks Az, I hope to get better shots as the dragonfly season gets into full swing.

Thanks Rick, The narrow DOF with long lens at the 10 feet is a problem.

Indeed not just better, it is a great composition. The lower stem tell nothing that the stem you left does not, rule of judges "if it does not add it detracts"... and the area to the left is as Linda suggests, the future flight area and part of the story. The Camera Club Judges would give you award points for this one. The original they would crop during the Critique Period. I have learned crop crop crop the hard way the first year with TBCC, OUCH
