Elephants remind me of the movie “The King and I.” Deborah Kerr played Anna Leonowens, and Yul Brynner played King Mongkut of Siam.

In the film, The King writes a letter to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln offering a gift of elephants for the purpose of multiplying in North America.

In real life the real King Mongkut did write such a letter. It was sent to then President James Buchanan. By the time the letter did arrive, Buchanan was out of office and Abraham Lincoln was the newly elected president of the United States. It was Lincoln who responded with a polite decline of the unique offer.

Interesting B&W effect. I've been to Loveland a few times but must have missed seeing the elephants there ... ;^) to be serious, I was wondering where the photo was taken.

You are right. There are no elephants in the area. This image is a composite. The elephant is from the Denver Zoo, and the background from northern Larimer County near the Wyoming/Colorado border.

Thanks for the reply. You did a good job putting the elements together for the composite. I thought the background might be from somewhere in Eastern Colorado or similar location.

That would explain the beautiful mule deer buck, just out of sight, in the upper right hand corner.

OK maybe NOT.

I love the photograph. It has excellent lighting, focus and composition. I have hunted in African and have seen elephants in similar places. Well done.

Chances are pretty good that there was a deer or two fairly near, as well as some antelope.

Thanks!
