Caught this frog (digitally) yesterday in our backyard pond. Spring must have sprung in Michigan.

Took two photos hand held, and composited them together in Elements 15 to add effect to the water and the DOF on the rock then cropped the image.

Nice job! I would just lighten (esp. the dark areas of) the frog a tad, and darken down the rock a bit, which is stealing the show.

You are right, I have been playing with it quite a bit after you mentioned the rock lightness, and the frog darkness, and nothing seems to work for me. I think there are too many technical problems with the picture. lighten the frog, and the dark area above the rock looks really dark, and distracting (like the rock). Luckily I have all Spring and Summer to try and capture something a little better to work with. Good thing is there are about fifteen frogs in that little pond, so I won't run out of models anytime soon.

Thanks for the pointers!

Cropped quite a bit, got rid of the rock, and lightened the frog. I think it looks better than where I started.

Also resized it for upload to UHH. I have been sending full size, not realizing they were supposed to be 800x600.... Oops.....

Spider- hope you don't mind, I tried my hand at your image, to illustrate what I was talking about.
I actually liked the composition. I'm not one of those who believes the main subject needs to be isolated instead of being in its natural environment.
I tried to create a rake of light over the rock onto the moss. The rock could have used more work with light varigation, but I think you get the idea.
Here's what I was trying to convey:

No, thanks for taking the time to play with this image. You were able to change it the way you had suggested, and I wasn't able to pull off. Your rendition looks much better! I kept coming up with almost cartoonish effects, huge variations from light to dark, which would probably be nice for black and white, but didn't look good at all in my rendition.

Thanks, and again I have no problem with others editing photos I have put online, it's good from my perspective to see how other people would do things with the same image. Nice to see we aren't all using the same box of crayons!

Actually your mind and artistic sense are your real box of crayons. Seems to me you are better endowed than many, and just needed another "nudge" to get it just so. But my suggestions are just another opinion, and certainly not the final truth. Keep shootin'!
