I am going to my grandson's baseball game on Friday night. Could someone please let me know what is the very best low light Nikon lens to use with a Nikon D500 camera.

Thanks

Depends on your budget for sports I would consider the Nikon 200-500.Rent it and try it.

Might depend on where you will be seated. Nikon makes a 600mm/f4 that is perhaps the best in its class.

I will be on the field, behind the catcher.

What position does your grandson play?

The best low light lenses are not affordable for most and tend to be unwieldy and very heavy requiring support. If you supply the target budget and if the field is well lit you will get more useful answers.

The max I would like to spend is $1600.00 on a lens because I will be going to a night wedding in Miami, which will be held on the beach in May and that will start at 9.00 pm, and those pictures will be more important to me.

Get a 70-200mm F2.8, on that body it will give you great shots from your position.

The best low-light lens is the one that has a wide aperture, such as f/1.4 or f/1.8, which many of us cannot afford, especially in a long lens. You do not say which lenses you do have, if any. If you are purchasing a long lens you might try the Nikon 80-400 (I have this and the Nikon 200-500 and both are wonderful lenses), which takes a sharp photo hand-held; I think the 200-500 will be difficult to hand-hold. The 80-400 lens is an f/4.5-5.6, so F/5.6 at the long end. The D500 (I have one) is a very good low-light camera, going a full two stops beyond what you see in the histogram. You can shoot at a very high ISO with this camera and get really good images. Whatever lens you use, you might try setting your ISO to 1600 or even 3200 to get the shutter speed you need; you can lighten up images in post if needed. I would also use auto-ISO as the lighting conditions on the field might vary by position of the subject. You can set this camera for the max ISO you want and the minimum is automatically set at 100 ISO. Shoot at f/8 and see how it works. Then re-set things as needed but this approach should work out fairly well for you.

Nikon 200mm f/2, 300mm f/2.8, or if you want a zoom the 70-200 f/2.8

Mt Shooter is right, but if you look you can probably find an older 80-200 f2.8 for a lot less money and they are still great lenses. That's what I primarily shoot with in low light for both my D5 and D500.

I guess it comes down to what amount of money you are willing to spend, as large aperture lenses are usually on the costly side!
I would be looking for something in the f/2.0 or faster range!
