Your set up on your new Mac should give you instructions for transfer. If not you probably can find it on the apple site.

Picasa has been "retired" by Google and has been moved to Google Photos. Which should work just fine with a Mac (I use a Mac, but haven't used the Picasa app in forever, and then I found that Picasa had gone the way of the Dodo.

You can use Picasa stand alone.

No photos reside "in" Picasa. They are on your hard drive, probably in My Photos, Photos - whatever your Windows version calls it.

What you will want to do is make sure you saved changes you made to photos using Picasa. While the change will show up when you open Picasa, if you did not save or save as (another file name), the edits will not be visible in My Photos or in any other editor.

All of the previous. When you installed Picasa it asked if you wanted to make it your "default" viewer. Go back to Windows as your "default" viewer.

Your new Mac will try to put your photos into its hierarchy application Photos. Photos can be thought of as an alternate index to your photos, arranged by the date in the EXIF data. If you have them organized any other way, Photos will be a monumental PIA. As of right now there is no easy way to use 3rd party software for editing. I'm spoiled, the old iPhoto could send the pic to Photoshop and PS could send it back. Not so with Photos.

With 50,000 photos, might you want to put them on an external device? A hard drive or in the cloud of something?

Picassa for osx can be downloaded here.

There are no more updates and it will probably ask to update to google photo's fairly soon after installation but it should help with the migration.

Just be sure to back everything up to an external hard drive FIRST.

Your photos are not in Picasa - they are in a folder on your hard drive - probably My Pictures. Picasa views them. To find the location where they are stored on your hard drive, click on any folder (left hand screen in Picasa), click "folder" (top menu) then click on "locate on Disk". Transfer the folder to an external drive, connect it to the Mac and import into Picasa on the Mac. Read this: http://picasageeks.com/2014/10/moving-pictures-from-a-pc-to-a-mac-for-picasa/

Good luck.
Mark

If transferring to a Mac laptop, you are wiser to leave the photos on an external disk and just work on what you need rather than bogging down the computer drive with endless photos.

What Tex says plus, copy photos to new Mac and leave on old PC as they are good for storage.
