Breakthrough Photography's X-4 CPL

Does anyone on UHH own and use this filter? I am looking for some personal recommendations for or against it. How long has Breakthrough Photography been in the filter business? They make some bold claims and I am wondering if we might have some actual users here who have thoughts on their results using it. I am not interested in brand comparisons, just this filter. TIA

I don't have that particular filter, but I have two of their ND filters that are excellent, very well made, very neutral color cast, much better than my B&W filter. That particular filter will be my next, no reservations at all.

After doing a bit of testing, with a friend of mine's, I'll stick with my B+W filters. All but two of my lenses are protected with their clear filters. I have a set of colored filters, as well. I believe in B+W filters to the point that to replace them with any other manufacturer's products those products would have to take award winning photos on their own without my intervention.

I have one and love it. Very high quality and design. I also have their ND filters and am very impressed. Got rid of my B+W filters and replaced them with breakthroughs.

Ron, interesting critique. B+W filters can be among the best. What was/were your reason/s for doing this? Breakthrough makes some tall claims in their sales literature. So far you are the first to agree with their assessments. One of their claims involves color quality, this is a new sales tactic I have not seen used before. While I can relate to "Very high quality and design" you do not address the color claim by Breakthrough. Do you notice any differences in this area? I am looking for guidance concerning this. Thanx.

I think several manufacturers use Schott glass, B+W being one of them. What sets the filters apart seems to be the coatings being applied. The Breakthrough advertisements show photographic comparisons of their filters vs. other CPLs using other coatings. The differences in the advertising is noticeable and I am curious if this is true in real life application of the filter. The CPL is an important tool for me, I am curious when something new arrives.

David, the first filters I used by them were the nd filters and there was very little color cast to them and their design is top notch. So easy to get on and off versus other filters. The price of them is also very very reasonable vs. B+w and other high end names in some cases 1/3 the cost. The polarizing filter is excellent as well. Very natural with no obvious color casts. Another plus is if you don't like them just return them with no problem at all. Try that with other makes that may not be so eager to give refunds. I'm thrilled to have found such high end gear with insane warranty at such reasonable prices. For me it's a no brainer. Just do it, you have nothing to loose. Cheers...

Ron, thank you for an honest, unbiased evaluation. Obviously, color is the prime requirement for me and you have answered my question concerning that. I shoot a lot of water surface and that is more difficult to cover than sky. Very few recommendations include color, which is critical for water use. Seems as though I will need to invest in a Breakthrough Filter and see if their claims satisfy my needs. Thanx for your help, it is appreciated very much.
