You have articulated a profound mystery concerning what makes us what we are. I became a grandfather to a beautiful and loving baby girl sixteen years ago, and often had the feeling that I was being given, so to speak, a second chance---a chance to correct some of my mistakes and omissions with my adopted daughter. Of course I love them both deeply, but I sense that there is even more to the mystery of what makes us unique among other animal species. By the way, your photo is really touching and evocative. Sleeping or awake, sweetheart or hellion, a grandchild gets a grip on your heart and never lets go. Nice portrait.
