There are various corruption laws and treason laws that regulate who you can get money from and who you can get in bed with that apply to presidential candidates. Association is perhaps not the precise word. Making deals is the issue, particularly when the deals are secret, or run afoul of corruption and treason laws. Candidates cannot make secret deals with certain entities. They cannot make deals with anyone who is a foreign agent, nor accept money from foreign agents, nor accept money or influence from anyone or any organization in exchange for promising to affect government policies for their benefit. There are certain behaviors and transactions which would be illegal for candidates while not being illegal for other citizens.
