It makes life very interesting, that's why!
That is actually true but also hard to explain. The reason most people come here is money. It is almost certainly the same there. (Note that they are at 73 degrees North latitude, and my location is at 71.)
The reason people stay is probably the same too: adventure! The harsh weather means there cannot be a rigid schedule for anything! People who want to settle into a nice comfortable routine that gives them the security of knowing they can easily deal with tomorrow... hate this place and do not stay long! The folks who stay love the adventure all day every day, the repeated problem solving required just to get from breakfast to lunch. One side effect of that is that long term residents treat newcomers with a grain of salt, we try to protect them from themselves but don't want to invest much in them. After they have been here a year, and better yet two, it is safe to trust they won't bail out next week. Even then there is still a divide between "real people" and transients. I came to Barrow to retire, but nobody believed that I would until I did. At that point people stopped treating me with any hint of "transient White Man".

There, obviously, are some people that think this is an adventure. Just not me, don't get me wrong I'm not telling you that you're not right in the head to want to live their. Many people do want to stay in these types of elements, and I have to give you a pat on the back to live there. Enjoy my friend, and have a hot drink for me.
