If you use the search tab at the top of this page and type in something like "need help with camera choice", you'll get several days worth of reading the advice of many of the forum members. Good luck on your venture. I researched for months before buying my first DSLR.

Hi Don, just chipping in my 2 cents. I (still) have my Coolpix p510, and stayed Nikon for my DSLR. I think you should do the same and follow some of these other talented peoples advice. any good Nikon used or even new in your $$$ range will do. I think depending on where you live your local camera store may have a deal for new. and I think you can go new with the D3xxx or D5xxx series. enjoy whatever you decide and have fun. :-)

I do have the D3300. heard its better than the new D3400. I don't know the D5500 but the new D5600 came out. have fun, enjoy, good luck with your decision. :-)
