Carrizo Plain Wildflowers

Abundant rains after several years of scarcity have produced amazing wildflower displays all over California deserts and semi arid regions. The Carrizo Plains is the largest remnant of native California grasslands. The first picture is an overview of the north end of the valley showing Soda Lake which is normally mostly dry and blazing white with minerals left after evaporation as it has no outlet. Across the valley at the foot of the Temblor Range what appear to be other bodies of water are extensive solar panel arrays.

Hi, you were there Friday, March 24? We are thinking of doing some photography at the Carrizo Plain in the very near future. I've been there before but never when there was abundant Wildflowers. Camped once overnight. The ranger told me on the phone that they did not think the flowering was at its peak yet. I guess I should call again. Looks like I should figure on a long 100-300mm Zoom lens too for birds? I've photographed the Pronghorn before. I might consider Infrared as well (for effect and haze penetration). We own a second home in Grover Beach but currently live in the L.A. Co. area.

Outstanding, high quality series. The landscapes well composed. All the shots are crisp and clear. I've never seen a Desert Candle but it is a very interesting subject. Well done!

Magnificent series that have to be seen in downloads to appreciate. We used to go this location every spring to see the wildflowers when we lived in southern California. Thanks for the wonderful memories!

Yes, we were there 24th and 25th. Some rain, some cloudiness, but sunny middays. There are species of flowers that have not fully bloomed yet, but hills are covered with the yellows and golds. I'm sure it will be gorgeous for several more weeks. And don't miss the flowers along Shell Creek road off Hwy 58 on the way out there from San Luis Obispo.
