Many laptops have a slot on the side for the card. My wife noticed the slot for the card on hers after having the laptop for a couple of years. Mine has the slot but has a plastic fake memory card to fill the hole when not in use.

I used to use card readers about ten years ago. I would experience problems of different sorts frequently. I quit using card readers and just connect the camera to the usb port directly. It takes slightly longer to download images, however I never, ever have card problems at all. It also removes the risk of card damage by improper handling. After a successful download, I format the card in camera, ready for the next shoot.

Hello! I'm new to the forum and would greatly appreciate any help! I have a Canon 6D camera, a MAC computer, and use an external sd card reader to download pictures to my MAC. I have always used Sandisk sd cards, and now purchase Extreme Pro 64 GB ones because I take tons of sports photos for my grandchildren. I recently had a problem when I put the sd card in the reader to download. Got an error message on my computer that said the disc inserted was not readable by this computer. I had been taking pictures for several hours and knew there were new pictures on it. I put the card back in my camera and it said the card needed to be reinserted because it did not recognize a card was there! No pictures!!! I had to download software from Sandisk to get the pictures off the card, and by the way, used the same external card reader to get the pictures off. Has anyone ever had these problems? Is it my camera, the card reader, or the MAC? I don't know where to start. I formatted the card again, and after taking about 1,000 pictures, it happened again. I quit using that sd card and started another one. Yesterday the same thing happened with the newer card.

It sounds like the card you purchased is "ahead" of your card reader (must be an older model), as it seems it is unable to read your card. Looks to me you need to update and buy a different reader!

There is a cord that comes with your camera that you can use and you don't have to remove the sd card from the camera. No finger prints on the sd card, no bent metal parts.

I use the card reader in the camera to read the SD SD card and to format the card. That makes the most sense to me since the card reader in the camera is the one recording the pictures I take onto the SD card. I use the software which came with my Canon camera that automatically saves my pictures by date into the File Folder of my choosing when I plug the USB cable connected to my camera into my PC.

After discussing my issue with a Sandisk rep, he suggested that since I had this issue with 2 different cards, that I have my camera checked. They will replace the cards, of course, if you have the receipts, etc. I also asked how many times to reformat the cards. He said when the card is full, and everything is downloaded, to reformat the card and start over again. Of course, I contacted Canon and they want me to ship the camera to them. I decided to buy a new more expensive sd card reader and try that before sending my camera away.

Maybe I'm dense but I'm thinking it's an issue between Mac and Canon files. If you format the sd card with the camera and then take a few pictures are you able to scroll thru the images within the camera to view them? Do you have access to Windows pc to see if the pictures on the card are viewable within Windows instead of Apple?

Thank you for your response. That's why this is so confusing to me. I can take pictures for hours, view them, go back and look at them, delete what I don't want, etc. and they are on the card. Come home and put the card in the reader and get the error message on the MAC. And it doesn't happen all the time! Only once with the newer card. I formatted it and took some pictures 2 days ago. Came home and put the card in the MAC reader this time and they downloaded with no problem. Photos on the MAC has it's own issues sometimes, like quitting unexpectedly, but I keep trying to try different things to see what is happening. I tried downloading directly from the camera and got a message that said can not be used with this version of the operating system. Next step, try to download newest version of the Canon download, and I bought a new SD card reader to try. Thank you again. Really appreciate everybody responding!!!
