Help needed from IT savvy Photoshop user.

I have been using Adobe CS5 program to download photos taken using my older Nikon cameras. I have been taking the photos in Camera Raw (NEF), downloading them on my Apple desktop computer, to my Bridge library and processing the photos in Camera Raw. I have recently purchased a new Nikon D7100 and am having problems opening/working on the new downloaded RAW PICTURES. When I click on the downloaded photo icons, I get a message stating "could not complete your request. Because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of the Camera Raw. Please visit the camera raw help documentation for additional information (version 6.3.0.79)."
When I navigate through the system, I get another message saying "Photoshop camera plug-in did not recognize the format of the files. If these files are from a camera, you may need to update your version of Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in. For detail see:
http://www.adobe.com/products/Photoshop/cameraraw.html.
Following tat, all I see are plug-ins for CC versions, but not CS5.
My question is: can I upgrade my CS5 program to process the files, without having to switch to CC VERSIONS?
I can acces the files through ViewNX 22.7.3, but I would still prefer using the old Photoshop program I have been using all along. Does this question make any sense and is there an easy solution. Thanks for any help.
I don't believe you can upgrade CS5 to the latest plug in to convert the D7100 files. You might try converting the NEF files to DNG files on import or download the free Adobe DNG converter and CS5 should recognize the DNG file. You lose no quality by doing the conversion according to Adobe. Hope that helps.

Thank you, TomC. I was afraid that this would be the most logical answer. I'll play with this tomorrow and hope I can figure out how to convert NEF to DNG on import. Any difference in importing as TIFF vs DNG?

I believe you can still buy a CS6 Lightroom. However it's been reported to be hard to find on the Adobe website. You will get more features than the CS5 has.
Personally, I'm happy with the Creative Cloud Photographers' Package. Subscription license, $9.99/month (plus tax). I don't consider it a large expenditure considering all the other photography stuff I buy in a year. And updates are included as they are available. And Photoshop (and Bridge) are also included. Yes, it's a monthly expense. No, the expense isn't large, and the benefits are substantial in my opinion.
In rereading your post I see you're using ACR, not Lightroom. They are basically the same thing, but Lightroom has (in my opinion) a more intuitive user interface. And it does your Digital Asset Management.

Yes, TIFF is a bit mapped image with raw adjustments "baked in" and DNG for all intents and purposes is still a raw file. You would run your raw files through the dng converter, then you can read them in your Adobe Camera Raw. However, the most logical answer is not to download the dng converter, but to upgrade your Photoshop to CC, and end this nonsense.
I had this exact question a couple of months ago. I contacted Terry White the Adobe guru and he sent back this reply.
You have two choices: Subscribe to the CC Photography Plan at $9.99/month and have the latest version of PS and Lr CC which will let you use your new D500 files
or
Convert every RAW file every time with the FREE DNG converter:
https://helpx.adobe.com/photos...e-dng-converter.htmlWhen I used his url above a very nice and user friendly DNG dialog box opened which did the trick and even I could follow it. I hadn't seen this box come up before in my searches. The Conversion process takes an inconveniently long time but it works and enables me to see my raw files and to work on them in ACR at last. I can live with that till I make up my own mind to subscribe to CC.

The converter is easy to use - free - and does the job.
Personally I like that for 10 bucks a month I have all the power I ever need for stills and video using LR and Photoshop.
I'm presently researching how much of Photoshop CC CAN'T be done in CS6 with workarounds.

Just a thought . . . the time spent looking for workarounds could be used learning the new features. :-/

Thank you, one and all. I'll start with downloading the DNG, but, @ 9.99, CC sounds like the way to go. I'll try both and will report back.

I think I got zinged on this one. My only consolation is saving $10/month.
