If cost is an issue - look for a used Nikon 28-105 D 3.5-4.5. You usually find them on ebay for less than $150. I've had this lens as well as the Tamron 28-75 and I found them to comparable in quality. The only problem with the 28-105 is the ugly lens hood.
I have two 28-105mm D 3.5-4.5 lenses. They are a tariffic used lens for the price. My first one got dropped on a cruise through the Panama Canal two years ago. The plastic filter retainer threads were broken, but the lens continued to do the job throughout the trip. When I got home, my top priority was its replacement because repair costs more than the lens.
Although I also have a 24-70mm f2,8 VRII, the 28-105 is what I use on my D800 when I travel because of its size. I have found that 105mm is the ideal focal length for portraits. When I bought my first Nikon F in 1959, the 105mm was the first extra lens I bought because of just that fact.
If you afford it, the Nikon is preferable. A 24-120 version might give you more flexibility.
