Is the part black consistent image to image? Is something getting in front of the lens like your camera strap?

If it is still under warranty, send it off to a Nikon Repair station.

Are you using a Lens hood? If so remove the hood an look again.

Take a picture then post the picture here so people can see what you are talking about.

What could it be?

Your Thumb
Your strap
Your Lens Hood
A malfunctioning mirror
A malfunctioning shutter
Without seeing what you are seeing, your guess is as good as any here. ;)

When you post an image, please check off STORE ORIGINAL as well as the EXIF data can also be seen.

Is the black area shaped like a slice of pepperoni?

As Dngallagher requested up there, please check the "store original" box so we can see your settings. I am fairly certain, though, that we can rule out pepperoni as the culprit. That's some progress. PLEASE help us to help you. To me that totally looks like you were shooting with flash at a shutter speed faster than your flash synch speed but you shot at an angle to the computer screen so I don't know if the flash was on or not.

This is definitely a shadow from something between the lens front element and the reflex mirror on your camera. Could be in the lens; could be in the camera. Try a photo with a different lens.

I agree that using too high a shutter speed with flash could give you the black portion of the picture area. BUT. that would not be visible in the viewfinder, only in the produced / resultant image. Must be something within the camera / lens light path.

What do you see in live view? Do you have active D lighting set to "off"? Has the camera been dropped? I'm shooting in the dark here....
My guess: it's a shutter failure and needs a service by a qualified repair technician.
