It appears proof reading is not a requirement anymore for editors. I was told this from my sister who is an only child who learned me English.

Nobody proofreads anything these days. I catch mistakes and misspelled words in the newspaper on a daily basis! They don't even correct for spelling in school anymore because they're afraid of stunting kids creativity. It drives me nuts, because there is still a right way and a wrong way to do all of these things. It's no wonder we are falling behind the rest of the world on education.

The "Diana was alive," was a deliberate comment by "Punch," a satiric magazine, referring to the way that the newspapers were acting after she was killed in Paris.

I have worked in the newspaper business and people are always supposed to proof read what another has written, including editors. This happens for different reasons; the most common ones are being worked too fast to make a deadline and everyone innocently missing it, the error being caught but let go to see if the original author catches before publication; usually just for the purpose of busting their balls, as we say, and lastly just to be mean or get someone back that the proof reader is mad at, usually followed by them making a big deal out it trying to get the author of the article in trouble. Human nature comes through every where.
