Some very interesting ideas...I too like the plastic bag idea especially on a day like today. Just one note, check the bags thoroughly because if you happen to notice lately they seem to be getting more cheaply made to push us to use recyclable bags.

Another Hack you might try at little or no cost and one that i often use:
1) Purchase a small eye bolt with threads that will match the tripod/monopod mounting hole on the base of your camera and run a nut up on the eye bolt to limit the bolt from threading too far into your camera.
2) Attach a length of braided nylon line to the eye bolt that is of sufficient length to reach the ground, plus a foot or two, that will enable you to hold the camera at eye level.
3) Step on the nylon line and pull the camera up until the line is taught and at eye level for focusing.
4) After taking the photo, unscrew the eye bolt from the camera and tuck it and the line into your pocket!
