Hi all, I will be spending some time in the New Bedford, MA area in a few weeks. Do not know much about the area and am looking for photographic suggestions. Many thanks in advance.

If you are into maritime history, The New Bedford Whaling Museum is a must. Ive been several times and find something interesting every time I go there. I live in the neighboring town and know the area fairly well. If you want to give me a few of your interests, I can try to give some more suggestions. Have fun. Gary
I live near New Beford and agree with the other comments. It is full of fishing boats and many opportunities for great shots.
The old whaling district has cobblestone streets and old buildings.
You can travel to nearby Dartmouth and Westport for scenic rivers, farms and seashore opportunities. Mattapoiset and Marion also have scenic shore areas.
An hour away is Newport, RI with its rocky coast and mansions. Go east about 30 miles and you are at the Cape Cod Canal. If you can get on the Cape, Sandwich is scenic.
Also, fort Phoenix in Fairhaven, Neds light in Mattapoisett in addition to what has been already mentioned

If you have the time, go to Newport,RI, its a short trip from New Bedford and well worth the drive.
There are several Lighthouses in the New Bedford area. The downtown area has a national park's office where you can get more information.

Take time for back roads to Cape. Always a feast for eyes and you will come across good, local places for crab cakes, chowder. My husband is from New Bedford. Back road air smells wonderful- marshes, hay fields. Folks fill their window boxes with color. Many great antique shops. Talking about it makes me want to journey there myself. Have great time!
If you like battleships, go west of New Bedford for about 15 miles to Fall River, Mass. Battleship Cove on Davol Street is there where the U.S.S. Massachusetts battleship is anchored. There are tours of the ships there. I lived in Fall River for many years. Another attraction is Lizzie Borden's house in Fall River on Second Street. You may have heard ....."Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks......"
Many thanks to all for your thoughtful replies. I will have a much better trip to New Bedford as a result.
