Does anyone have any experience with the above lens. Tamron has released a newer version and Nikon has one that is higher priced but has great reviews. I take mostly outdoor shots: birds and old buildings. Some scenic views also. Will the newer Tamron work on a Nikon D5500.

I got one when I bought my Canon 7DII body, deal from the shop, extra discount when bought with a camera. I am not much on wide angle, though I own some for "just in case". It was a very good lens, my daughter fell in love with it so I gave it to her when she graduated from Pre-Med in Sept. She had it 95%+ of the time anyway. Most of her shooting is at CosPlay, Anime, Steampunk etc events and wide angle works fine for her. I can still borrow it, or just use my 14mm on my FF 6D if I want to go wide.
It has its own focus motor so will work fine on the D5500.
In that general range you might consider the Sigma 10-20 or the Tokina 12-24. The Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX II 11-16mm at about $400-450 is supposedly the highest IQ lens in that range for Nikon DX bodies (well there are lenses that cost a small fortune that might be better) and the newer PRO II has a focus motor for your D5500.
I've been using mine for a few years, and love it. Used it last November at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, where a good wide angle is essential. Anyone interested in aviation should put it on their bucket list. Bring a good wide angle
I am sure bobbyp wants to know about the following lens. Tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4.5 DI-II VC HLD Zoom Lens f/Canon Nikon DSLRs . This is a new lens. Last I looked the Cannon version is not yet available.
On youtube the Angry photographer says that this new lens is sharper than the Nikon. You decide if he is right, This appears to be the only at least semi technical review on the web at this time. The lenses mention by robert above are older lenses and the Nikon is better than them. The old sigma 10-20 f 4-5.6 would be cheap and is OK. I too would be very interested in a comparison of the Nikon to the new Tamron. Photos Please!!
I have the old 10-24mm Tamron and use it with a 7 D and like it. I went to the 10mm because I wanted a 17mm on a non full frame. I use a Canon wide on my 5D as the Tamron will not work on a full frame camera. I feel a lens wider than a 17mm is too much distortion.
I have a Tamron 10-24 and it works great.
<robertier> what about tokina's new 11-20 for about $500 ? would you recommend that one to him also ??
