Question for Olympus OM-D Users

I have the OM-D EM 10, and just uncovered something missing. The Picture Mode options in Shooting Menu 1 do not include either a Monochrome or a Custom mode setting. Both are included in the Users Manual. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Am I overlooking something obvious?

Olympus just announced a B&W contest for OM-D and PEN users. Any help will be appreciated.

Not sure why it would be missing. Is it in a different location on the E-M10? Is it possible you have one of the first E-M10s off the production line and not the latest firmware update? Check and see if you can download the latest firmware and see if that corrects it. If not, an e-mail or call to product support is in order.

Mark, I just opened up the manuals on-line. For the first E-M10, the manual doesn't show Monochrome B&W. For the E-M10 mII, it shows a section for Monochrome B&W. They may have added it to the earlier E-M10 via update so check that first. Otherwise, it will probably take post processing or upgrading to the E-M10 mII to get to the Monochrome B&W.

Thanks for responding. My firmware is updated to the latest release, but, yes, I did buy soon after the EM10 was announced. I tried sending an email to support, but it appears they shut down for the weekend.

Thanks for responding. My manual does in fact show Monochrome and Custom as Picture Modes, and my firmware is current to 1.3. I can always fall back on PP to get what I need, rather than upgrading just to get to this one upgrade.

My 2 cents: Shoot in color (preferably RAW) and then change to B&W in post processing. You have a lot more latitude to adjust it to look better. SW such as NIK's Silver Efex can do amazing things.

Mark, I have the OMD M10 MK ll. That camera has a ART setting on the top dail where it says, AUTO, P, A, S, M if your M10 has ART-Setting, you'll see ART.
Set on ART you will find Monochrome, High-Contrast B&W. HOW'S THAT!

or call Olympus: 800 260-1625 they are very helpful with all the latest Olympus cameras. Open 9:00am to 9:00pm. Mon to Fri. AP

You can call Olympus customer support. The number should be in the manual or google it. They have long hours and are very helpful.

I believe that AP is correct. Monochrome is a B&W setting. Otherwise it should be in the same location where you set vivid and standard. I had two of the EM-10's but I don't recall. I've had a number of the Olympus camera's with Art Filters and recall Monochrome in the filters.

I am of the school that shoots color and brings it home. As a friend once told me, "if you were in the woods, you wouldn't shoot images and leave the color on the forest floor when you come home, would you?"

I have two aftermarket books on digital B&W and there is so much more you can do if you process your B&W, than if you set the camera to monochrome, which basically desaturates the image. No control over filter effects, color channels individually, and so forth.

Having shot film and B&W for many years, one became accustomed to the effects to be had from filters in front of the lens. Setting monochrome on a digital camera and not using filters as with film, one can only get filter effects and so much more in post processing of the color image.

I have an OMD M10, not the II version. My menu in #1 under Picture Mode shows Monochrome as well as Custom. I have no Idea as to whether I have an early or late version camera - I bought it last year as a Refurbished from Olympus.
Love this camera by the way and I'm a diehard Nikon user!!
