I had the same issue Erv had with cheap replacements in my old Nikon D3100. The camera wouldn't recognize them so I bought another Nikon battery.

As far as voltage goes, I'd stick to exactly what the manufacturer supplied with the camera in case of warranty issues. But that's just me.

It may sound like heresy, but shott the camera in Automatic/Program Mode just to get used to it (100 images should do it).
