I've been taking photos since H.S., but this question from my sister-in-law has me stumped. Any recommendations?
S-I-'s request. "I am thinking about getting a better camera than my current "point and shoot." Any suggestions? I want to say you are a Nikon person versus Canon. I don't want to spend TOOOOO much....you know me, kind of cheap...but maybe $300-400. Please let me know if you have any ideas."
A used camera probably won't work. Thank you.
Nikon might have some refurbished DSLR cameras that might fit the bill.
http://www.nikonusa.comThe only one that comes close is a D7000, but still higher than her range.

Go to KEH.com and look at their used DSLR's Don't be a Nikon snob, Canon, Olympus, Sony
and others all make great cameras. KEH will give you your money back if you are not happy.
I've never purchased new, and have never been sorry.

A good Bridge/super zoom would do the trick.
Some very good ones are $500 or so.
You can even get larger sensors like 1" to also up the image quality a lot, but the price will be 2 or 3 times the mentioned budget.
All the major brands have a bridge camera in that approx range.
Panasonic recently came out with the Lumix DC-FZ80 for $398.
Canon has their PowerShot SX540 HS fof $399.
Nikon has their COOLPIX P700 for $447.
Sony has their Cyber-shot DSC-HX400 w/ 16GB card & small camera bag for $448.
All of these are NEW at B&H.
Adorama has refurbished D3400 for $360. It's a good camera for a really good price.

Tell your sister in law to go to "Canon Refurbished Cameras" and see what they have to offer. I think at that price something would be available. Could be a SX60.
Whatever you do, be sure that your sister-in-law makes the final decision. Then, hopefully, she will not blame you if it's a bad choice. I recommended a camera to my sister but then sent her to a good camera store where she made her own final decision, which was for the same camera. She seldom, if ever, uses that camera and have I've escaped blame.
Panasonic FZ80. A new Bridge Camera for $400, new.

She would be well served with the Canon system I own it and still find the EOS system over all to still be the most advanced and growth friendly system without limiting older products to not 100% fully working with newer products. For example a T5i will work 100% with any EOS system lens ever made. That is pretty unique to Canon.
They are well made and you can get in relatively cheaply.
Nikon has a good inexpensive option but is quite limited on lens options as older lenses will not meter and even many AF lenses out there will also not AF so she would be worried about what works with what that Canon has no problem with for the T5i.
If she wants a DSLR in that price range, she can look for a refurbished Canon SL1--it's a very nice camera, lightweight, and lots of available lenses, both new and used.
She might look into a refurbished canon SX60 that would give her all the lens she would ever need--or a similar bridge camera.
Let her buy one herself. If you pick the wrong one, you know what you will be.
