Just got back from a trip to central Nebraska to witness the Sandhill Crane migration.
It was a truly awe inspiring experience.
Over 400,000 cranes gather on the Platte river on their way north to various nesting locations.
They fill the fields during the day, then gather on the river sandbars to roost for the evening.
The light was rather low, so these shots are quite noisy. Not the best situation for the m4/3 sensor.
Taken with an Olympus EM-1 mkII and a Leica 100-400mm f4.0-6.3.
Nice images. It's a rare sight to see so many birds like this gathered together in one place.
Very appealing! I love the high key feel to #3 and the semi-silhouettes of #1.
It's good to see how they have rebounded from being on the brink of extinction 20 or so years ago. Now they have healthy flocks making their annual migrations. I even remember reading about how a man flew an airplane (crop-duster (?) minus the "dust") to lead 5 cranes down to a wilderness area in New Mexico (don't know if it was the Bosque del Apache or another one further north.) He had raised the young colts to migration and then, just like ma and pa, led the youngsters to their wintering grounds.

Thanks, Linda. That means a lot coming from you. I've admired many of the photographs you have posted in the past.
