I like to try to capture birds in flight. How is this? Only a seagull, but you have to work with what you have...
Unfortunately, the bird's left eye can't be seen because it's in the shadow area. You should be able to see one of the bird's eyes. You don't want the bird's wing to be overlapping with the wooden pole.
Not bad! I'd like to suggest trying the drive mode of your camera to take several quick shots in succession. You'll increase your chances to get better framed shots
I happened across a young family feeding seagulls with a loaf of bread last week and there were many flying around so I could get lots of good chances up closer. I'd show the pictures of them, but I don't like posting pictures of people I don't know without permission.
Baiting wildlife is a no-no, but there are lot's of ways to get closer with some planning and luck.
Hi welcome to the forum...nice first post.
Seagulls are fun to shoot try getting in closer. If you don't mind here is a comparison shot I waited till he got close as I only had my 70-200mm lens with me.
"...I like to try to capture birds in flight..." You're certainly not alone here... I very endearing genre indeed...
Please allow me to suggest that you visit the Birds-In-Flight / Birds-On-Water Forum

"How is this?" Truly makes me long for summer and those soft sea breezes that carry those gulls aloft...
"Only a seagull, but you have to work with what you have..." Carpe diem! a.k.a. "seize the day"
mrnmbrcrnchr please accept my apologies for the rude UHH members who choose to respond to your post inappropriately by simply showcase what they feel are "Better" imagery of seagulls... They instead are showcasing their immaturity, tactlessness and as such are the bane of this site... Wanting on to pontificate in order to establish stature amongst peers? Get real clowns...
That said a Big "Shout-Out" to fourg1b2006 who understands the concept of diplomacy...

Best advice? Might be wise avoid the Main Section on UHH in as it is full of rude trolls who bring little if any value to the dance..
I wish you well on your journey mrnmbrcrnchr

Please accept my apology for posting pictures if it wasn't helpful. It certainly wasn't meant in the spirit of comparison, it was meant to share the joy and inspiration.

Seagulls are amazing. I really like shooting them to improve my skills because they are willing subjects.

BTW I don't think my pictures are necessarily better. My backgrounds are boring. The exposure of my white birds in flight leave something to be desired. I too welcome criticism for my shots and am hoping to share the journey of constructive criticism here with you. I should not have posted the bird not in flight, but its useful to compare what can be done with a still bird to the moving one.

I strongly disagree. As a public forum, you should expect people of all kinds and all kinds of comments to be taken with a grain of salt. If you wan't encouragement, post pictures on Facebook to your friends. If you want to improve, challenge experts here to give you solid advice.

Yes, thanks again for sharing. And Thomas902 - thanks for pointing out previous posts with tons of helpful information.
Thanks for all the responses!
It's not "only a seagull," it's a picture that you took enjoying your hobby and practicing your skills.
Birds in flight at best are difficult to shoot. If this is one of your first, then kudos.
Angles that show more of the face, perhaps an eye, tend to be a little more interesting. Head on shots are great when there is something in their talons (obviously not a seagull). Keep up the good work. Enjoy it for you. If others like it, that's great.
Do you know there is no such bird as a 'seagull'.
Dave.
It's all good...i try to keep the positive and let the rest go...
