How many check your camera firmware and how often
Just got a Nikon D5500 and i check about once a month or when I happen to go to the website.
Usually, I find out by the firmware updates are posted on social media, via e-mail or here
I don't know what I signed up to on the Nikon site years ago, but I get a pop-up notice on my computer whenever there is a firmware or software update.
However, if you register your products on Nikon's site you can get an email notification. It's choice three under e-mail preferences.

When I find out that there is an update, from UHH, email, or an online article, I do the update.

I found that if you register your camera with the manufacturer they will send you a notification when firmware is available. Also the periodical emails from DP Review always contain firmware notifications. You can always go to the manufacturer's website.

Once every six months on Nikonusa.com
My Fuji forum lets everyone know about updates.
I have a Nikon D5300. I believe I registered it, but never received any firmware update notices. Are there any hazards or risks associated with firmware updates?
Thank you.

Go to service and support. Follow the directions. I also have a Nikon D5300. the last firmware Update, Ver 1.01 was in Jan, 2016. There was also a distortion control update in august 2016. Your menu will tell you which ones you have installed.

Nikon will not notify you even if you do register. You just have to check now and then. Yes, there are some risks, but if you follow the instructions, those risks are mitigated.
Firmware is software in the camera that tells it what to do as you take photos. It isn't uncommon for any manufacturer to come to the realization that functions in a particular model need to be adjusted for more accurate operation. So, they release a firmware update to fix it. Plus, if there are new features, that's how they add them to your camera.
Install every firmware update . . . . carefully. Read the instructions.

Once a month for the first year of a new camera's life. About every quarter after that. Panasonic provides frequent updates for its better, recent cameras. My GH4 is at 2.6.
Use a freshly charged battery you trust, or an AC adapter, during the update process.

Good to know. Now I realize why I don't receive firmware update notifications from Nikon. Thought it should be automatic when I register my gear on the site. Who knew one had to take an extra step - obviously not yours truly. Thanks, Bill.

I check my firmware only when I receive information there is an update available. There is no rhyme or reason as to the interval.
