Where There's Smoke, There's Fire

The Linville Gorge area near my home has been burning for several days now and the smoke canopy across the sky created some very interesting lighting effects as the sun was going down. Once the sun had set, I was able to capture some of the flames zigzagging up Short Off Mountain. It's so sad that the gorge area has suffered several fires in recent years.

On a different note, I took my crop sensor camera with a recently acquired 70-300mm lens, thinking I would need the reach. Wrong. The full mountain range filled the frame at 70mm. I would have been better off putting the lens on the full frame camera and would have had better detail in the low light and more framing options. Now I know why I've loved using my 18-200mm for so many years on the DX cameras--unbeatable versatility.

That is a sad situation but the first shot is super! I also like that you can see the flames so clearly in 3.

Thanks, Dirtpusher. It seems that much of the country is now highly susceptible to fires...scary times. Fortunately, we don't see the fires geting into the tree canopies here like they do in the West. Are you on the prairie? I would think the grass fires would be the hardest to stop the spread of.

Thank you, kpmac--the vantage point from the lake helped to make the images a bit more interesting, I thought.

Ah, you've updated your avatar, Pat--nice! Glad you enjoyed the series. It just seems somehow conflicting to try to make fire appear attractive.

Sad, indeed, Carol. The upside is that it is a wilderness area. That first shot was the luck of timing--the sun was hidden minutes before, and dropped below the smoke minutes after.

Glad you enjoyed them, John. Judging from the skies yesterday and this morning, the fire seems to be mostly contained now. Short Off Mountain is a much photographed focal point for this area, but the blackening along the mountainside in recent years, along with pine beetle damage, has detracted from it's beauty considerably. I guess every living thing has its 'blooming' season.
