Glacier - Going to Sun Hwy?

I am going to Glacier in the middle of June. I know snow may present problems, and the pass on the Sun Hwy may still be snow covered.
My question is, if the pass is closed can you still drive on most of the road to see and photograph the rest of the scenery? Or is the entire road closed?
Appreciate all responses.
Thanks

Duane

Duane, I was there two years ago in late May. The road was naturally closed, but there was no access from either end even though the road was clear from what we could see. Lake Mary access was denied as well. Gary

Duane,
I was there a couple of years ago in June and the middle portion of the road was stilled snowed in. But you can still see some great scenery if you come in from the east side of the park. The views from the west side vary depending on the point where the road closes.
Hope that helps.

Why not go online to Glacier National Park and see if there aren't advisories to tell you the exact information you are looking for?

I'm sure the park ranger station has a phone. See if you can call them and ask...

It depends. They plow the road until it is finished, and however much of the road they have plowed when you get there is how much you can drive. They usually open it in sections that terminate at some sort of turnaround though so as not to create a pile up of traffic at the end.

I've been to Glacier twice in July, and both times the road was still closed. Still haven't driven it.

I am pretty busy. Maybe the OP could call to ask.

It's getting to be quite a busy place. We started going 35 years ago and have been back often. Then, it was our little secret and west glacier was a sleepy little town. Now everyone knows the secret and there are jams everywhere in midsummer until Labor Day. Worth it to take the free shuttle because parking is hard to find at the popular places. Going before school lets out or after Labor Day when family vacations ease up beats some crowds but you risk snow. There was 3 inches of snow at Logan's Pass in mid August last time I went. Melted quickly though.

PS Try Two Sisters Cafe in Babb north of the East entrance. dive-y decor but good food.

What is your problem Dennis?
I just asked a simple question, a yes or no answer would suffice.
Much talk re Glacier here on the hog, thought I could get a simple answer while I finalize several different reservations.
Many thanks to those who replied with answers.

Duane I have no problem at all. Maybe you should look again at my answers and at whom they are directed. My reply to you was simply to check out the Glacier website. It would have absolutely more accurate information than you would likely receive here on UHH.

A Few years ago I used the Yosemite website at the suggestion of my wife. I was going to go there during the winter to photograph. I had assumed weather would be fine. After all it is in California. I had no idea there even was a website. Checking the site showed that where I had planned to travel was closed and deep in snow. I thought giving you that information might be helpful to you. I guess not.

Then there was a post to me that I might call the ranger station. I simply replied that it really should be you who should call. Apparently that poster didn't know how to use the reply button or had me confused with you. At any rate I don't feel I was rude to either one of you. Again, I have no problem.

Duane,
Yes; in mid June you should be able to see most of the scenery and take memorable pictures. Opening the road from one end to the other depends on how much snow falls in April and May and the number of avalanches the plows experience during plowing. The last to get plowed is "Big Drift" East of the visitor center at the top of Logan pass. It averages 85 ft in height.
If the road is not completely open what you can do is go into the west entrance. About a mile into the park is Apgar where you stop for a great photo of Lake MacDonald ; then proceed along the Lake on the going to the sun hwy and be sure to stop at Avalanche where you take the walk of the cedars to Avalanche gorge for a great photo op, also take the trail to Avalanche lake where you can walk along the stream for nice scenery. From Avalanche you will probably be able to drive another 20miles. If the road is closed you return to the West entrance and continue go east on hwy 2 to East glacier and make your way toward St Marys. On your way detour into Two Medicine lake for more photos. At St Marys you will be able to take the going to the sun along St. Mary's lake to the point of closure (if closed). From St Mary's you can drive to Many Glacier (40 min) which os one of my favorite areas of the park.
Take time to visit the old hotels at Lake MacDonald, East Glacier and Many Glacier.
As others suggest the website has good information about the park and road status.

Thank you big sky!
Choice hotels book up a year in advance, but I just managed to get accommodations in East Glacier for three days and Apgar are for four days.
Looking forward to capturing some of the best images of my life.
Again thank you.
