I use a black Rapid, Ilove how it feels, and h ow the camera is now at my side my only regrets is I didnt buy the double....to carry both cameras.

I use the Black Rapid also. Very comfortable. I have the sport version with an additional tether to make me feel a little more secure with it hanging on my side.

I use my neck strap the same way for the same reasons typically tucked at my side. It's so much more comfortable! Cheers! S-

How not to do it,before betting the straps:

The shoulder strap eliminated a lot of work,as would your method!

I've been using a Sun Sniper and have been satisfied with it for carrying a D3 with a Nikon 200-400mm, f4, and, at other times, a D500 with a 200-500mm f5.6. I use a RRS clamp to connect with the tripod foot on the lens. I just added a Magtech sling for lighter lenses that seems to be working well but it isn't padded.

If you use the search option, you will find numerous discussions of various straps that will alleviate the discomfort of the standard neck strap. Most UHH's recommend Optech or Black Rapid, but there are several other options as well. Personally, I have a Black Rapid Sport and I absolutely love it. A little pricier than some of the other options, but well, WELL worth it in my opinion. Whatever you decide, you will NEVER, go back to a standard neck strap. Good luck.

I've tried Black Rapid, OpTech, BoStrap. All very good, but I've finally settled on Peak Design. This modular system is the most versatile I've seen, and one of the most compact. The camera attachments make strap configuration a breeze, whether using it as sling or traditional over the neck. It also incorporates an Arca-Swiss plate into the system right from the start, so no issues with quickly going on to a tripod/monpod.

The original Black Rapid camera strap. Make sure you use the tripod collar on your lens as the carrying point for the strap.

Try a Black Rapid strap. I own 3 and love them. I use mine with a Swiss Arca plate on the bottom of each camera and or lens foot and have a Swiss Arca clamp attached to each strap so they attach and detach fast and easy. The plate also distributes the load evenly on the bottom of the camera body.

The Black Rapid sport solved the
problem of pressure on my neck. Highly recommend.

I've been using Black Rapid Sports strap for quite a while. Sling over your shoulder and camera or long lens attaches via tripod screw. It makes hiking easy and the camera is always in a fast ready position. Alternatively, but bulky, is a waist holster, with which you can carry an additional lens & or accessories.

I have a much lighter camera, but even so I found that walking around with it hanging from my neck was,... well a pain in the neck. I tried several different straps and it didn't make much difference. The problem was the pressure on the back of my neck and no amount of padding would change that.

Finally, I tried out a harness https://www.amazon.com/Release-Shoulder-Harness-Decompression-Ergonomic/dp/B01H5SX4AW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1490094006&sr=8-3&keywords=camera+harness+chest and the problem was solved - no more pain.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned OP/TECH, but I'll add my recommendation.
