A tip I just found that some of you may already know: While I have never been happy with the Nikon 1.4 teleconverter - IQ decline and loss of stop - i stumbled on a better (and much cheaper) solution with my D610: Scroll to Image Area under under Shooting Menu, and click on Choose image area. Easy switch from FX to Dx and my 300mm becomes a 450mm with no discernible loss of IQ or f-stop.

You do not understand optics and FX and DX very well.

Yes maybe not declinable but about 50% less sensor used therefor a smaller file and no different than cropping in post. I would NOT use this for the sake of having more latitude in crop. I feel this feature is best used to utilize a DX lens only.
PS. Use your 1.4!

As ImageMeister says, you will lose a lot of pixels doing that.

When you switch to DX only the central part of the sensor of DX size is used, all the pixels outside the DX size are not used.

Perhaps you do not fully understand either IQ or the term discernible....

Better yet, buy a D7100 and use it.

You will need software - unless you already have Adobe - which uses "Bicubic smoother" to make pixels. - you can also google pixel enlargement .....for other softwares.

With a 7100 and a 300mm fx lens you could get 450mm in the dx mode and 585mm in the crop mode.

Bad idea. If you have a full frame camera, use it.

If you do use Bicubic smoother, I am still of the opinion that you enlarge in steps of 10% or less - some will argue this is not "necessary" - but then again it does not hurt either - just takes a little more time ......

No matter which camera you are using or what you do in the crop settings a 300mm lens is STILL a 300mm lens. I does not become a 450....

It may have the same field of view as a 450mm on a full-frame camera but it's a 300mm lens.
