When a manufacturer (e.g. Canon or Nikon) offers a refurbished camera for sale, have they replaced the shutter? If not, wouldn't it be just as subject to early failure as a camera you bought on eBay?

It depends on why the camera came back to the manufacturer. I purchased a refurbished 80D from Canon for $850. The camera had a very low shutter actuation count and it looks and works as good as the brand new one I purchased when the 80D first hit the streets. It came with a brand new battery and charger and the same warranty as a brand new one.

Ask them. Refurbished is a badly used term when it comes to cameras.

What is special about cameras in the context of refurbished?

I buy refurbished before new and here's why; when a new camera is made it is on an assembly line and it keeps moving, several people are responsible for the assembly of a single camera. Then at the end not every camera is meticulously inspected. When a camera is returned and refurbished only one technician works on it, there is no assembly line and at the end the camera is carefully inspected and the technician signs off on the repair. So much more individual attention is given to the camera. I always buy MANUFACTURER refurbished.

All of my equipment is Canon which was purchased at their refurbished site. Most of the equipment I have purchased has been returns. The cameras are all inspected by technicians and carry a one year warranty. I have been able to distinguish my refurbished equipment from brand new equipment. I highly recommend them. Good luck.

Was there a "not" left out Mike?
Thanks,

I'm with tramsey. I have purchased four factory refurb cameras, three Nikons and a Sony. All have been excellent. Couldn't tell them from new except for low but not zero shutter counts. That shutter is good for 200,000 operations. The cameras generally come with a 90 day guarantee, but some vendors extend that to one year.

I prefer a factory refurb. That word "Nikon factory" or "Sony factory" is important. I have purchased other refurbs that were done by 3rd parties and were really bad news. I trust Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. to not willingly put their brand on crap.

They would inspect the camera carefully but if it's working and looking perfectly fine then they don't do anything to it.

Ebay sells many Canon and Nikon camera's that have not been refurbished, unless folks specify. Nikon warranties are non transferable so even if you buy a Used Nikon 6 months old on ebay with a US warranty, that warranty ends when you purchase it. Refurbished Nikon camera's from Nikon come with a 30 day warranty. Many camera stores will add their own 1 year warranty to the 30 day Nikon warranty, but there is no guarantee that the 1 year warranty work will be done by Nikon. Many folks on this site will buy refurbished. I do not, Nikon camera bodies I buy new, Nikon lenses I buy Mint from ebay. There is a higher probability of something going wrong with the camera than a lens.

I've bought Canon refurbished bodies and lenses. They've been perfect, and at a good saving. Likewise, I've bought refurbished Apple computers, with again complete satisfaction.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy all gear that way.

Perhaps, but shutters rarely fail. Most refurbs come with very low shutter counts because they are either demos or warranty returns...thus less than one year of use.

But you get used cameras on eBay, not manufacturer's refurbs. They could have years of professional use.

The manufacturers give them a thorough check and fix anything iffy. They clean them meticulously.

No. Depends on the specific eBay merchant and the exact camera. Some merchants are authorized dealers.

If your buying Referb, buy from the Manufacturer , not some guy on ebay. This way your getting the factory guarantee and not the guy that works on cameras in his basement.
I bought a referb lens on ebay and tried to register the lens with the Manuf. Turns out my guarantee is with the vendor andNOT the manufacturer. Ive had no problem with the lens but lesson
learned.
