5DIII, 400mm, 1.4 extender, F8 at 1/640. Spot metering, spot focus. Guesswork in cropping and photo editing. Seems okay, hoping to learn more. Comments or suggestions, please? Took several shots, all seem a little soft. Handheld, but resting lens on window ledge. Thanks for looking.
I like this one a lot. There appears to be a lot of depth. If possible I would have positioned the bird to the right of center so that there is more space in the direction he is looking, and less behind him.
I could see this on a greeting card.

Lovely shot that expresses the solemn nature of winter!

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I got the greeting card vibe too. I'll re-crop and see.
I like your photo a lot. It has a dreamlike quality and is very engaging. That length of lens is hard to manage, and you did well.

Charming image, like the composition and mood.
I do like the feel of this too, and if possible I would move him more to the right as suggested. I usually don't look at all the bird shots too long but this one really captured my attention. I do like it!

New crop. Any better? Thanks for looking!

Much better on the crop!
Now your eye goes right to the bird, with it's pop of color in the winter wonderland setting!
There was just too much going on in the original crop, and my eyes didn't know where to settle.
FYI it is a common house finch. Nice shot

Thanks. Hm, I used to know that. Don't know where I came up with purple finch. Oh. I think I have those too.
You definitely know a purple when you see one that looks like it was dipped in merlot😉
