I've posted this before: there's nothing, in my opinion, quite like paintings to teach us , as photographers, about composition and lighting. After all, these artists start with nothing and create something with intention.
I have a friend who plays the oboe in the Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra. These are pretty good musicians, but it is Portland--not NewYork, London, Paris, et al.
Tonight I heard a Violin Concerto by Tchaikovsky performed by Alexander Markov. Oh my God. I have never heard such an extraordinary performance. I've only been awestruck a few times: seeing the Pieta by Michelangelo, for example.... So how does this inspire? Well I'm visiting Olympia National Park for several days and it happens to be one of my favorite places....so perhaps something bleeds over as I hike through the only true rain forest in North America... we shall see...
So, what inspires you?
Well said, LoneRangeFinder. I've had the good fortune to be present at some great performances of music, including a violin concert by Issac Stern once on my brthday, a glorious "Moldau" from the Cleveland Symphony and exceptional, unique performances by Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Tina Turner and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
I am most inspired photographically by the beauty of the landscape, the mountain, the canyon, the waterfall, etc. I posted a couple examples in the Rocks Challenge thread. I am also going to see Brit Floyd in 2 weeks.

I am inspired by strong sensorial impact - by any sense modality.

I used to work very near the Art Institute in Chicago. Many times, esp. on stressful days, I would disappear over there on my lunch break and relax looking at favorite paintings and sculpture. Tho I had seen some of them hundreds of times, they never failed to move me deeply.
If I have to nail it down I would say I am most often inspired by beauty (which can be in the eye of the beholder). I love to photograph beautiful things; especially, but not limited to, landscapes. Also seeing beautiful furniture or wood art inspires me to do wood working. Beautiful scenery also inspires me to worship God.

Quiet and solitude in beautiful countryside. To sit and think, look around and see. To imagine 'how it would look' and then fail so badly with the camera that 'I must go and do it again!'
My excuse naturally.

I sure wish I had your eye. What a great picture that is (the one you titled "Shadows)!
My inspiration comes from my need to be purposeful in everything that I do with my time. In photography, I am challenged to make images which are simplistic yet tell a story and inspire both me and the viewer.
I seem to have lost my inspiration, I take a technically good photograph, look at it and go "eh, it's ok". I no longer get that "wow" feeling that I used to from creating something good. I thought about buying a new camera to renew my interest. but I don't know...maybe it's rime to give it up
Yes that was very inspiring, i just wish i could have understood what they were saying.
I get inspired by making an exceptional image. Unfortunately, I am very "left" brained but it serves me with my architectural and real estate photography. I have a son and grandson who sometimes shoot with me. My son is "right" brained and my grandson is graced by having a mix or left and right. They inspire me because they get me to see things differently and they add the "whys". That's inspiration to me.
