One of my students asked a curious question. Of all the pictures captured via (a) DSLR and/or (b) cell phone, how many of those actually end up being printed and displayed on the wall? Of course, I would never exclude those who are shooting a SLR and film.

From my colleague UHH members around the world, as well as here in St. Louis, I'm really curious to hear the results.

I actually print quite a bit and am always amazed at folks who say they never print their images. Pictures were intended to be printed, I think, and seen!

That was an amazingly quick response, and AzPicLady, I thank you for that. I particularly enjoyed your comment: Pictures ... printed.

Before I reveal my habits, I want to read more.

I would say the percentage is miniscule. I take thousands of pictures every year. Maybe 10% are worthy of being printed. But my walls and the walls of my friends haven't got room for hundreds of prints, so maybe a dozen a year get printed, framed and hung. At one time in the good old days you had to print pictures to see them, as very few people could get anything out of looking at a negative. And so we ended up with drawers full of 4 x 6 inch prints because the drug store printed the whole roll. Now we can display them on our computers, TVs, digital picture frames, and cell phones. So we don't have to print them to enjoy them.

I like mcveed's explanation of the differences between having to print (in the old days) and wanting to now.

Up until about a year ago, I printed very frequently (or more accurately, Costco did). I have a small apartment with two wall groupings where I often would swap out the prints by season or genre (wildlife/birds/landscapes) or pp (b&w), or other unifying theme:

1. Five thin black frames, 3 metal, 2 wood: 11x14, 8x8, 8x12 landscape, 8x12 portrait, 8x10.

2. Seven frames, mostly goldish in color; most of the frames are 8x10 and five have mats for 5x7 prints.

Leaving the frames in the same places, but just changing (smallish) pics, is handy and cheap!

My goal is the print. I'm getting ready to sell my negative scanner as we speak...I'll just scan any prints that I want to put online.

In my opinion...it's not a photo until you can hold it in your hand and drool on it. :)

Interesting how times have changed. Years ago, I would get 2 sets of every roll of film processed! Fortunately, over the years I have cleaned out all except a rare few and all have been scanned. In the past 6 months, I have printed 2 - 8x10; and about 10 - 4x6 (mainly for magnet photo frames on refrigerator & small frames). The two portraits are of my Labradoodles, and the others children & grandchildren. I do have an digital photo frames filled with special photos rotating. The beauty of the digital age - I love it!

As many as I can find room for 😀Ÿ˜. My Canon photo printer does a very nice job, but I confess, I still prefer a real silver-based print for B&W from the darkroom. I'm lucky to have a long back hall, previously unused, but with the addition of track lights, has become a B&W gallery - no color allowed! Kudos to my professional photographer friend, Doug Pitts, for this photo of it.

A very small percentage of my shots make it to the wall, but I am regularly making 4X6 and 5X7 prints for my partner to put around the house. Mostly of the family. She rotates the images through the various frames she has located about.

I print hundreds of 4x6 prints so my wife can use them in scrapbooking. I print many 8x10s to put in frames for my office and home office. A few actually make it to the walls- I do have one 24x36 print currently on the wall among the 8x10 prints. I have a few 16x20 prints awaiting frames and placement on the wall.

When I was printing 4x6 of virtually everything I shot (first two years of digital), a friend "re-cycled" them at nursing homes, daycare and other places where there are crafts programs. Mine were mostly flowers and cute critters; this suggestion may not be applicable to all
