These are from Pigeon Forge going into Gatlinburg.

Those are really chilly images, Gene! I shivered just looking at them as I recalled similar wintry walks in the past.

Impressive! The second image is really special, both technically and artistically IMHO..

This first one is, as the sign says, "A dormant hot spring cone." It formed many, many years ago by hot, mineral laded water seeping out of the ground. As the water evaporated and left the mineral deposits the thing grew until it reached a height such that the spring didn't have enough pressure to keep the process going. So it literally sealed itself off and became dormant.

If you live in the town shown to the right or any other house in the area, the second photo shows that you could walk out of your house and find some elk comfortably grazing or napping on your lawn.

The third photo shows a still active and much larger hot spring and the rock formation it has created over the years. It is located a short distance to the left of the first photo.

We have a tradition of taking grandchildren on a special trip the year of their 12th birthday. Four of them were with us on this trip to Yellowstone in 2014.
