First time out with the Canon 5 D, 100 x 400 is L lens plus 1.4 extender. Number one problem it weighs a ton, only focus on manual and I am 80 years young and not able to hold it steady, but surprised that I got this good. Bee

you might want to look at monopods. much easier to use and carry than tripods.

Jeez that set up is heavy!
Why the 1.4 on the 100-400?
Unless you are after something very specific where you absolutely require the additional reach, I'd ditch the 1.4 for everyday use (keep it in the bag) and go with AF.

Certainly scenics such as you posted here unlikey need 560mm focal length.

Plus since that is so heavy it will be best to keep your shutter speed up as best as possible for the subject matter and lighting to reduce the possibility of camera shake.

You are right it is really heavy, but just wanted to see if I could do it with the" is" only and not carrying the tripod. I wanted to practice for getting bird pictures. Very difficult for me to reach out to adjust the focus and hold on to the camera. I have used it with the 70x200 on auto focus without too much trouble. Thanks for the suggestion, will try it next time I am out. Bee
