Looking to photograph some eagles before they are chased off by the osprey this spring and to also test out a telephoto zoom to purchase in the future.

I wanted to rent either a Sigma 150-600mm 5-6.3 Sports DG OS HSM, Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 or a Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED for my new Nikon D810. When I eventually do make the purchase, looks like the Sigma will run about $500 more than the others ... just curious as to anyone's thoughts / experiences with these lenses, the superiority of the Sigma lens and also any recommendations on lens rental companies. Thanks again for any/all expertise on this!

I have no experience with the Sigma or Tamron, but I own the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens and it is great.

I have used all 3, on numerous bodies, and my personal choice was, and still is, the Sigma 150-600mm Sport version. The Tamron G2 actually comes close in image quality, but the minimal weather sealing is the deal breaker for my shooting.

Ditto. The Nikkor was a real pleasant surprise for the price.

But if you have the opportunity to try the others do so. I have no way to know in the Nikon is better or worse than anything else.

I have been using the Nikkor off and on with a D7200 since I got it last October.
I have had good results using it hand held, but because of the weight and my age, I
prefer not carrying it around and use a tripod.

No experience with the other two.

I have the Nikon 200-500, and it is an awesome lens, love the constant 5.6 aperture. From the extensive research I continue to do, I do think the Sigma Sport lens you mentioned is superior to the Nikon...gives just as good image quality, plus gives a bit more reach. Now, is the Sigma worth the extra cost, that is a personal decision. If I were younger (I am 73), and just starting out, I would go with the Sigma....but you won't go wrong with either the Sigma or the Nikon. BTW, I started out with that Tamron lens, IMHO, it cannot hold a candle to the other two.

This is not a constant aperture lens. The electronic diaphragm doesn't work on any pre-2007 cameras, hence you have to use the lens wide open. If you put this lens on a D750, D810, Df etc, you get the full range of f stops.

I looked at and used the Sigma Sport, Tamron G1, and Nikon. The Tamron came in 3rd, the Nikkor 2nd, and the Sport 1st - It produces sharper images, built like a tank, and has an extra 100mm to bring things a little closer. This was last August/September. Today I'd say that it's a coin toss between the Sport and the G2. I only borrowed the G2 for a couple of hours, but I came away thinking I could be just as happy with it as I am wihtthe Sport.

I am not saying you can't get great images with the Nikkor - it is a very good lens and it does a great job. But I own a Nikkor 600 F4, and the Sport is the lens - at the time - that came closest to it in image quality. All but two of my lenses are Nikkor, btw. I use them with a pair of D800s.

I have mounted the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens on my D810 and have been extremely happy with the results. Better glass, stronger mounting system, superior electronics and coupling system, faster though out the zoom range, sharper through out the zoom range, better build, 5 year warranty, and best of all, the lens was specifically designed, engineered, and built to fit and work to perfection on a NIKON camera body, unlike other glass that are designed to work on 3 to 6 different camera bodies.

Agree with this, though I only have the 200-500 and the Sport. Never concidered the Tamron, but I have heard it is ok as well. The Sport focuses fast with the 810 and the 500.

I have the Nikkor 80-400mm lens and I love it (however it is the older version and doesn't have the internal (SWM) focusing motor) but I've heard great things about the 200-500mm Nikkor lens.

There is a big difference between Tamron G1 and Tamron G2 lens. I would go with Tamron G2, but if weatherproof sealing is a must and weight is not a factor then go with Sigma Sport.

I have had very good experience with he Nikon 200-500. But get yourself a good tripod with a gimbal head. You will last longer in the field.

I believe constant aperture' in this case refers to the fact that the maximum aperture does not change when you zoom the lens. Based on that, this is a constant aperture lens. -- Dave
