Error 50 on a canon 7d

I have an opportunity to get a 7d with the kit lens, a 55-250 and a 50 mm. It has an aftermarket battery grip. It will shoot all right in manual mode, but when in auto mode with the flash, it gives an error 50. Is it worth anything?

I had the same issue with a 20D. In my case the lens was faulty. It worked with other lenses.

BTW, it has aftermarket batteries. I don't know if that has an effect on anything.

Its a battery problem apparently caused by the after market battery. Try removing it and re-install it. If that doesn't do it, get a factory battery for that model. Good luck.

I just Goggled the Err 50: "an error related to electronic control"-it suggests removing and re-installing the battery-as mentioned above-and if that fails, suggests sending the camera in for repair. Good luck-hopefully it is a battery issue.

It seems the problem only occurs when the pop-up flash is activated. It will work in all modes except when the pop-up flash is activated.

Perhaps the flash draws more power than this particular battery can deliver?

I've seen several discussions online that Err 50 (along with other faults) started to occur after a camera had gotten wet in the rain. That would suggest a fairly serious electronic fault. If it seems to occur only when using the built-in flash, it might be a short in the flash's circuitry.

Built-in flash basically suck... so I almost never use them and if that's the only time the camera fails to work properly, it might be fine. But if it got wet, other things may start to fail.

STM lenses on a 7D is like putting wooden shoes on a 100 meter sprinter. While those lenses are fine and should work and be able to make nice images... USM lenses are faster focusing (usually 2X or more, compared to STM) and better tracking movement, which are 7D's forte. It's a sports/action/wildlife camera... while the lenses mentionred are, well, basic "kit" lenses. 50mm might be a USM, if it's the f/1.4 version... the current f/1.8 is STM, while the earlier f/1.8 is even slower/noisier micro motor focus drive. At one time there were micro-motor versions of both 18-55mm and 55-250mm, too... neither of which is as good lens as their respective newer STM versions.

I just googled "canon 7d mark ii error 50". I got LOTS of results. Too many to list. Have you tried googling it?

Yes, I have. I was hoping someone had a situation that they had resolved. Depending on the price, I may take a chance. The 50mm lens is a really nice one. It has a set of macro adapters, a battery grip and two batteries. I already have a 7d so I can have a few add-ons for it.

It could be the after market batteries, it could be the after market battery grip, it could be a dirty lens/camera contacts. Too many variables to be definitive. Test without battery grip first.

I don't know if you are buying the camera from a store, on line, or private owner, or how much$. I suggest you look at B&H used cameras. ( https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/SLR-Digital-Cameras/ci/15488/pn/2/N/4294182649) are reliable. Personally if you know it has an error signal it should signal you to back off. BTW why do you think the owner is selling this camera? You will never know its history. No matter what kind of bargain it may be, it still isn't in working condition. Im disappointed at the seller for selling a non functioning camera. Walk away from this bargain. I own a 7D and one thing to be aware of is that the shutter assembly wears out. Ask someone here if they know how to find out how my shots were taken on this camera. Good luck.. BTW the 7D is one of Canon's best products.
